Maryland General Assembly Unanimously Passes Bill to Reestablish Social Studies as One of the Four Core Content Areas

This new law will require:

  • Social studies to be tested once in middle school through an assessment that includes both multiple choice and constructed response items
  • Social studies to be tested once in high school through an assessment that includes both multiple choice and constructed response items.  This test will be a part of the high school assessment program

Social Studies Bill Becomes Law

On May 22, Governor Martin O’Malley signed into law a bill that addresses social studies as a Core Content Area and requires MSDE and local school systems to evaluate the time, staffing, resources, and emphasis the discipline receives throughout Maryland.
