The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum is hosting its annual Arthur and Rochelle Belfer National Conference for Educators in July. The English Language Arts section will run July 8-10 and the Social Studies section will follow July 11-13. Both conferences are at the Museum, and the content is for six through twelfth grade. Community college instructors are also encouraged to apply. Each section is facilitated by Museum staff and expert teacher educators who work closely with the Museum. This year, the focus will be on one of the Museum’s newest initiatives and exhibits, Some Were Neighbors: Collaboration and Complicity in the Holocaust, as well as looking at digital and media literacy through the lens of propaganda and Common Core. Participants will focus on writing, memoirs, historical thinking, and Holocaust survivor testimony, using the Museum’s vast online offerings of primary source materials.
Participants will have time to view the Museum’s Permanent Exhibition before the Museum opens to the public and after it closes. They will also receive free books and materials, and a voucher of $100 to be used in the Museum Shop. We provide lunch for two days, and we also provide an evening reception on the second evening of each conference section so that attendees have two hours in the Museum after it has closed to the public. We have a limited number of scholarships, at $1,000 each, to award to attendees. While participants must pay their own way to come to Washington, DC and also cover their lodging and meal costs, the scholarships help offset these costs to a large degree. We award the funds upon successful completion of the program. Acceptance is first come, first served, so as soon as a teacher registers, he/she is given a confirmation code which guarantees a spot at the Conference.
