State Superintendent of Schools, Lillian Lowery Asked about Social Studies during House Briefing

State Superintendent of Schools, Lillian Lowery, was questioned extensively about Social Studies and Science during a briefing of the House Ways and Means Committee on Tuesday, December 11.  Questions posed to Dr. Lowery were centered on when the results of the Maryland Social Studies survey will be released and how will social studies related data be displayed in school system’s master plans.    Dr. Lowery stated that information related to both documents will be available soon, but was unable to give specific dates.  The Maryland Council will keep members posted as new information becomes available.

North Caroline High School Students Win National Economics Award

Recently,  students from North Caroline High School in Ridgely, Maryland submitted videos to the National Council on Economic Education’s Contest focused on “What should the next President do to improve the economy?”  After videos from across the nation were evaluated, one of the videos submitted by the NCHS students was selected as a national winner. Charles County Teacher Named Gilder Lehrman Maryland Teacher of the Year

MDCSS congratulates Mark Howell of Westlake High School in Charles County, Maryland for being named Gilder Lehrman’s Maryland Social Studies Teacher of the Year.  Mr. Howell’s dedication demonstrates the profound impact that social studies educators have on the lives of young people each and every day.

MDCSS Seeks Candidates for Its Board of Directors

The Maryland Council for Social Studies is preparing to hold elections for its Board of Directors.  The Council is seeking candidates for the following positions:

President-Elect, Secretary, Membership Secretary, Director of Communications and Member-At-Large

Those interested in running for one of the positions above should send an email to smccomb@mdcss.org stating their interest. Candidates must be members of MDCSS in good standing.

Bonnie Hain, Senior Adviser for ELA & Literacy in Social Studies Keynotes at MDCSS Conference

Bonnie Hain, Senior Adviser for English Language Arts & Literacy in Social Studies, gave a well received address at the Maryland Council for Social Studies Conference on October 19.   Ms. Hain’s PowerPoint entitled, Understanding PARCC and Disciplinary Literacy, is available on our website under the annual conference tab.
