Recently Pulitzer Prize winning historian, Taylor Branch, was interviewed by the Baltimore Sun about a new condensed version of his Civil Rights trilogy developed for use in schools. During this interview, Mr. Branch lamented, “America doesn’t evaluate schools on how well they teach history, just on how well they teach reading and math.” He continued, “But if you don’t study American history, you won’t have a feeling for what makes this country unique and you’re not as prepared to be a good citizen.”
It is clear that Mr. Branch understands both the value of history education and the need to focus new attention on it in American schools.
